Besi kasar dihasilkan dengan cara meleburkan bijih besi(iron ore), kokas(coke), dan batu kapur(lime stok). Hasil akhir tergantung terutama dari macam sumber yang digunakan. Bijih besi utama yang terpentingialah hematite(Fe&lt;span style="font-size: xx-small;"&gt;2&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;O&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: xx-small;"&gt;2&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;), sementara besi pirit(Iron Pyrite, Fe&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: xx-small;"&gt;2&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;S&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: xx-small;"&gt;2&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;) cukup tersedia tetapi tidak digunakan karena kandungan sulfurnya yang harus di elimitir oleh proses tambahan lainnya.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="font-size: small;"&gt;Kokas adalah bahan bakar yang digunakan pada proses yang terjadi didalam blast furnace. Kokas adalah batubara bituminous yang dipanaskan pada temperatur tinggi sekitar 1200 - 1400&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"&gt;˚ C dimana hampir semua gas yang mudah meledak dikeluarkan, sementara bekas sisa saluran gas akan membentuk lubang-lubang kecil sehingga menjadi berpori-pori.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"&gt;diameter rata-rata dapur tinggi adalah sebesr 8 m dengan ketinggian bisa mencapai 60 m,&lt;/span&gt;&lt;span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"&gt; kapasitas harian berkisar antara 700 - 1600 ton dalam 24 jam. material dasar berupa bijih besi, kokas, dan batu kapur dibawa dan dimasukkan ke bagian atas dapur tinggi dengan menggunakan gerobak dan alat angkat. untuk memperoleh 1000 ton besi kasar, diperlukan 2000 ton bijih besi, 800 ton kokas, 500 ton batu kapur dan 4000 ton udara panas.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-theme-font: minor-latin;"&gt;&amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp; &amp;nbsp;Bahan dasar padat dimasukkan dalam lapisan yang berubah atau lapis demi lapis.
